The Insulin Stress Response Theory

Welcome to this website which outlines a novel medical theory describing the role of insulin following life threatening injury. The theory postulates-

• a specific insulin secretory stress response following life threatening tissue injury

• two endocrine stress pathways that regulate glucose sensed insulin secretion following injury

• new pathophyslological mechanisms resulting in stress hyperglycaemia

• Insulin as a key hormone in the activation of the innate immune system

• a model outlining new regulatory mechanisms of the inflammatory response to tissue injury

• a new endocrine role for visceral adipose tissue following injury that offers an explanation for the obesity paradox. 

This research aims to provide a new paradigm to reducing morbidity and mortality following life threatening tissue injury.
